I often say that if you’re looking for all that’s wrong in the world, you’re sure to find it, but if you’re looking for all that’s good and right, step away from your news “feed” and nourish your soul without the wires. The strongest connections are live ones. They don’t demand your attention; they wait for you to give it to them. Our country is calling and waiting patiently.
The Joy of the Open Road
From sea to shining sea, the U.S. is home to some of the most spectacular sights and captivating wonders. To fully appreciate and take in all the hidden and not-so-hidden gems, all you have to do is fuel up and hit the open road. Adventure is calling! From sleepy little towns to big, bustling cities, from quiet reserves to mighty forests and sweeping plains, to breathtaking mountains, lakes, and oceans that leave you feeling small when you stand near them, our country is a patchwork of intricacies just begging to be explored. Flying, and even traveling by train, doesn’t give you the time or flexibility to capture the essence of America.
Planning an Affordable Adventure
Traveling cross-country on a budget is not only possible but can be part of the adventure. I had the unique opportunity to grow up traveling across the country. It wasn’t glamorous. There were no expensive hotels or elaborate itineraries – just us, a vehicle, and the open road. Every stop was a window into a different world. Every stay was an introduction to a new culture, philosophy, and set of priorities. Across the US, states can feel like 50 different countries – each offering something different: a new landscape, a different backdrop, and a story of grit, told with pride.
Road trips are the greatest equalizers. There are no first-class tickets, no fast passes through popular areas, or VIP seats. With no or nominal admission fees, it’s the greatest attraction of all, offering a fully immersive experience that can never be duplicated virtually. Home to some of the most diverse landscapes, natural wonders, historic landmarks, and national parks, it’s not just scenery you take in, but an experience that leaves you in awe and appreciation.
Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday Through Travel
As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, my heart is filled with pride for the land I love. Honoring her is easy. Being unbothered by naysayers is a bit more challenging, but a solution is staring us in the face – literally. When you drive across America, you can’t help but feel pride in the collective effort, demonstrated resilience, and the unrelenting patriotism of a grateful nation. Ronald Reagan’s words ring true, reminding us that our freedom is not free; it was paid for by many who selflessly chose to protect, fight, and even die for it. Driving past fields, alongside railways, and next to truckers, you see those who work the land, keep things moving, responsibly manage our resources, and provide for us all. Often without recognition, these are the hardworking Americans who step up, take over family farms, and choose to be stewards of the land, vowing to protect, preserve, and maintain what we’ve been given and what we’ve grown. Ensuring the next 250 years are uncompromised is no easy task.
The more miles you drive, the more reasons you’ll find to love our country. America is full of wonder and surprise, history and innovation, and stories of humanity, persistence, sacrifice, and bravery. There’s a reason so many people, both citizens and visitors, take road trips each year. If you need a perspective refresher, plan a road trip to rediscover what our country stands for, what it represents, and what it offers. Find the beauty, savor the moment, and be reminded of the privilege of living here.
This year, as we celebrate our nation’s independence anniversary, don’t let the celebration pass without exploring what makes this land so special. Be the person who stands in wonder and awe, appreciating the gift of calling this country home. As we honor America’s past and look toward the future, we are all examples and extensions of this land. As we pay tribute to America, remember that our duty is not only to enjoy and claim our space but also to honor, respect, and protect it.
