In honor of the Fourth of July, marking 249 years of our country’s independence, and our military’s 250th birthday, I asked Americans what they love most about the United States of America. I was on a mission to deliver a feel-good message, but I also saw an opportunity to provide a timely reminder of the privilege it is to call America home. Cue the song, “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood.

I received countless submissions in response to my patriotic prompt. There are more things to love about our country than the space I have to write. I’ve done my best, however, to summarize some of the most popular responses below:

From rolling hills, valleys, and plains to snowcapped mountains, lakes, and oceans of blue, America offers a wealth of beauty to explore. There are iconic landmarks, stunning beachesnational parks, and treasured views in every corner of all fifty states. The charm of our country’s spirit is not to be overlooked, though. In tragedy and triumph, Americans come together, and only then do we realize our strength. Our country’s beauty, coupled with the depth and radiance of its citizens’ spirit, is truly breathtaking.

Beyond the varied landscapes, U.S. citizens represent the ultimate definition of diversity. Within each culture and across ethnicities, beautiful traditions, eclectic food offerings, meaningful experiences, and significant contributions exist. America, a nation of immigrants, welcomes the tired, the poor, and offers a sense of belonging to those wanting to call the land of liberty home. Of course, there are some rules one must abide by, but without them, there would be no law and order, creating uncertainty —the very thing many come to America seeking to escape.

America is the land where hopes and dreams can become a reality. It is the springboard of vision, innovation, entrepreneurship, risk-taking, and personal protection. There is no limit to what you can achieve in this country if you work hard. With strong infrastructure, access to a global market, and the ability to create and promote your unique platform, the possibilities are endless. I spoke to many who immigrated to this country, with nothing but a dream for a better life, who worked meager jobs, pursued education, and proudly achieved their dreams of personal and financial freedom. Miguel loves that “everyone has the right to follow their dreams.”

America, the land of the free, is a place where you can be whoever you want to be. Thanks to the Bill of Rights, Americans enjoy freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and many other fundamental rights. Citizens can fly any flag (but respect “Old Glory”), support any leader or cause, own and protect land, have a choice in education, a right to privacy, and freedom to live wherever they choose. You even have the right to an attorney if you can’t afford one. Innocent until proven guilty, U.S. citizens have the right to a fair trial —a far cry from the treatment you would receive in these countries.

Freedom isn’t free. It’s bought and paid for by the blood, sweat, and tears of our nation’s bravest. You can’t love our country without recognizing and appreciating those who serve to protect it, or honoring those who died fighting for it. The United States Armed Forceslaw enforcement agencies, and various government protective services put their lives on the line countering threats against our country and its people while protecting us and the freedoms we enjoy. The sacrifices so many have made for us, and the willingness of those who choose to serve and protect, acting as guardians and defenders, is awe-inspiring. We owe everything to our brave men and women in uniform.

On July 4, 1776, our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the United States of America. Laura loves that, “Our country was formed by divine intervention, bringing together a group of passionate geniuses.” Because of this document, along with others, we enjoy structure, guidance, equal opportunities, and individual rights. Another beloved piece of history is our flag. Proudly waving with fifty stars and thirteen stripes, the American flag symbolizes freedom, is a beacon of hope, a sign of bravery, and a testament to our resilience.

As we celebrate this Fourth of July, may our love for our country be stronger than any political debate. May we be reminded that it is a call to action each time we place our right hand over our heart and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, sing the National Anthem, listen to a patriotic song, or reflect on the many events that have shaped our country. It is an opportunity to stand for those who stood for us, and show respect for all we have been given. As Georgia O’Keeffe said, “One cannot be an American by going about saying that one is an American. It is necessary to feel America, like America, love America, and then work.”

God Bless the U.S.A.
